 |
Seattle Memorial Stadium - Brett Eisenhart and Katrina Carlsen each scored three goals to propel Lakeside to a 9 - 8 victory over Bainbridge for their third consecutive Girls Varsity A title at the Washington Lacrosse State High School Championships, Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.
Lakeside, which has now won a total of six state Girls Varsity A titles since the girls tournament got underway in 1993, opened the game on a goal by junior Morgan Merriman (#15). The two teams then traded goals in a back-and-forth defensive match, with Lakeside taking a 2 -1 advantage into the half. Lakeside goaltender, Sarah Adler came through to support a strong defense making big saves. "I told her at half-time that she’d done more work than was expected in an entire season," said Lakeside head coach Jamie Asaka.
In the second, following an unassisted Lakeside goal by Einsenhart at 24:14, Bainbridge turned-up the heat scoring three consecutive goals to take a 4 – 3 advantage.
Lakeside added another goal by Eisenhart followed by a Bainbridge goal by Mariah Walk to make it 5 – 4 Bainbridge. Lakeside’s Carlsen then connected just 36 seconds later at 16:06 for her first of three that ignited a four-goal run putting the Lions up for good.
"We had a good one on our hands and we let it slip away," said Bainbridge head coach Tami Tommila. "It was a great game – back and forth."
With 2:39 remaining, Lakeside’s Lucy Williams connected to give the Lions a 9-6 advantage. Bainbridge then made a final push to unseat the defending state champions, with Mariah Walk and Lucy Schlesser threatening the Lions with goals at the 1:02 and 28-second mark. Bainbridge then won the draw and brought the ball into the Lakeside zone, but was unable to score as the game ended. "We knew it was going to be a defensive battle," said Lakeside’s Asaka. "Bainbridge is such a great team. It’s a matter of who’s winning when the clock expires."

"The game plan we put in place worked for us the whole game," said Snohomish head coach Craig Hess. "Maintaining possession in our offense was the key.
