General Notes on the 2008 Season

The league website (wslax.org) is the official site for the league schedule containing announcements, Board minutes, Coaches Council minutes and other miscellaneous correspondence intended for coaches and teams. Teams should refer to the website for any questions regarding league business.

WSP Background Check

Each program must certify to the Board that all members of the coaching staff have undergone a Washington State Patrol background check prior to any contact with participants. Certification must be made in writing by return of the attached Certification. The Certification must be signed by whomever is accountable for the program. In most cases this will be one of the following: the school athletic director, program board president, or head coach. Teams will not be allowed to participate in league play without proper certification.

Schedule Information

All scheduling will be handled by the designated league schedulers:

High School Varsity A, Varsity B and JV - Sue Haviland

5/6 & 7/8 - Doug Armintrout

Procedure For Changing Game Field Or Game Time Conflicts

Refer to the WSLA Handbook Section 11.2 for a complete description of procedure. Contact the Board Vice President as soon as the conflict is known for approval (please note HS programs should contact the HS VP; Youth programs should contact the Youth VP). Upon Board approval, the coach requesting the change must contact the opposing coach to request a reschedule. The game is not officially changed until the Official’s assigner has been contacted by the Board and has either accepted or denied the change based upon official’s availability. If there is a date change necessary, coaches should consider the number of games scheduled for the new game day prior to making a request.

Remember: No game at any level is to be played without officials.

Fees/Dues For 2008 Season

Official’s Fees:
High School - $60.00 per scheduled official for each league scheduled game.
Middle School - $42.00 per scheduled official for each league scheduled game.
Youth - $29.00 per scheduled official for each league scheduled game.
Travel Fees- $30.00 per team.
Note: Each program is required to supply a coach (assistant or JV coach preferred) to attend the ref training session.

In addition, each High School program is required to provide a new ref to help alleviate the strain on the current ref pool. This individual must attend the local ref clinic and cover a minimum of five (5) games at the JV level or above during the season. This individual may not be a high school player or student but may be a parent, a neighbor, a coworker or any member of the community—be creative!

Each Youth program is required to provide a new ref to help alleviate the strain on the current ref pool. This individual must attend the local ref clinic and cover a minimum of five (5) games at the youth level during the season. This individual may be a high school player or student or a parent, a neighbor, a coworker or any member of the community—be creative!

Programs which fail to supply a new ref must contribute $100 toward ref training. WWLUA will advise the WSLA Treasurer of the names of the ref candidates and number of games officiated at season's end. Fines will be determined from this information.

League Dues:
$5 due per player on the official roster posted March 10, 2008.
No refunds will be granted for players who quit between the first day of season and when the official roster is posted.

High School League Standings

Standings of the teams in the HS League will be determined on a win-loss record and a point system. Each team will receive two points for a win, one point for a tie, and zero points for a loss. In the event that two teams have the same number of points, the two teams will be compared in their records against each other. If they are tied in that comparison as well (each team won one and lost one against each other), then the goal differential between the two teams will be compared.

Example: Maryland and Princeton both finish the season with 22 points. When they played each other Maryland beat Princeton once and Princeton beat Maryland once. The scores of the two games were Maryland 10, Princeton 8 and then Maryland 5, Princeton 12. Maryland scored 15 goals and had 20 goals scored against them. While Princeton scored 20 goals and had 15 goals scored against them. Princeton had a point differential of +5 while Maryland had a point differential of -5. Princeton will rank higher in the standings. If Maryland and Princeton had had a point differential of 0 (each had won and lost a game by the same score) then the teams will then be compared based on statistics for the whole season. The statistic to be compared will be goals against the whole season (not including scrimmages).

Tie Games

In the event of a tie in a regulation season game, there will be no overtime play.

In the event of a tie in a playoff game, overtime will be carried out as described in the US lacrosse rulebook.

Responsibilities To The Game

Coaches are role models. As such, they shall always conduct themselves so as to maintain the highest principles, integrity and dignity of the game of lacrosse.

Coaches are responsible for knowing, understanding and following all the rules of the game as established and directed by the US Lacrosse/Women’s Division and WSLA.

Coaches must adhere to both the letter and the spirit of all the rules.

Coaches are responsible for ensuring that all players understand the rules and their spirit. All participants in the game of lacrosse must adhere to the letter and spirit of all the rules.

Coaches recognize that officials are major participants in the game. The Coach shall neither exhibit nor tolerate any behavior from others (staff and squad) – verbal or otherwise – that might reflect poorly on an official. This includes, but is not limited to arguing or criticizing a judgment call by the official in a derogatory or harassing manner. If a coach has a safety concern, he or she may call a time out to stop play and calmly express said concern to the officails. A Coach may comment on an official’s performance or opposing coach's performance through the WSLA Coaches' Feeback Process*. Public displays of displeasure – before, during, or after a contest – are not among these approved methods.

* - WSLA Coaches Feedback Process:

A Coach, player or official may download a Conduct Feedback Form. The individual is to submit this form to the Board President if the incident concerns a High School Game or to the Youth Board President if the incident concerns a Youth Game. The form may also be used to submit observations of exemplary positive behavior. The President or Y-President will acknowledge receipt to the person submitting the form within 14 days.

The President or Youth President may determine to file the form for future reference or take action via the Board at his or her discretion. Possible actions include but are not limited to reprimand and suspension.

Win with character, lose with dignity.
