WSLA Game Cancellation Policy (when no officials are available)

Due to the low numbers of certified adult officials in WA state, WSLA foresees a high probability that some games this season will be canceled due to the inability to have umpire coverage. In order to cancel games in a fair manner across programs in Washington, WSLA has established the following cancellation terms to prioritize game cancellations.  WSLA and WWLOA will maintain a current list of certified officials that programs have contributed and will refer to that list when determining which games to cancel if necessary. The programs that have supplied the fewest (or no) officials will be at the top of the list; those that have supplied the highest number of officials will be at the bottom.

Factors that will be considered:

  • How many adult officials the program has contributed to the umpire pool in the previous season.  (i.e. The higher the number the less likely your game will be canceled.)
  • Has this program had any games this season already canceled due to lack of officials.
  • Has the opponent in the potentially canceled game contributed officials to the pool.

Please note, once a game has been canceled due to lack of officials, your program will not face another cancellation until all other teams on the list have as well.

Guidelines for Lightning Disturbances:

1. Assign staff to monitor local weather conditions before and during events.
2. Develop an evacuation plan, including identification of appropriate nearby shelters.
3. Develop criteria for suspension and resumption of play:
    a. When thunder is heard, or a cloud-to-ground lightning bolt is seen, the
thunderstorm is close enough to strike your location with lightning. Suspend
        play and take shelter immediately.
    b. Thirty-minute rule. Once play has been suspended, wait at least 30 minutes
after the last thunder is heard or flash of lightning is witnessed prior to
        resuming play.
    c. Any subsequent thunder or lightning after the beginning of the 30 minute count,
reset the clock and another 30 minute count should begin.
